Things to leave at home

  • Envy

  • Strife

  • Theological hang-ups

Things to take with you

  • Joy of having a purpose to fulfill with excellence

  • Faith that Jesus Christ has saved you

  • Hope of a home in Heaven

  • Love of Jesus to share your hope with others

  • Team Spirit

Things to avoid

  • Fatigue will rob your joy and make you cranky. Get plenty of rest.

  • Do not leave your telephone number with the kids. They will call you COLLECT!

  • Don’t criticize the program, other team members, or the Belizean people.

  • Don’t complain about food or lodging. They give you the best they have.

  • Don’t look at Belizeans as less intelligent. They are not.

  • Belizeans are proud of their country. Respect it and them. Don’t diminish their pride.

Things to expect

  • The food will not be American food

  • The beds will not be American beds

  • The bugs will not be American bugs, and there will be lots of bugs!

  • The cars will not be…well, they are American, but they may be really old

  • Expect hot temperatures and high humidity

  • Expect long days of hard work

  • Expect your life to change

Things to remember

  • Belize is a small nation. What happens in one place quickly spreads across the country.

  • Guard your reputation and the team's reputation.

  • Because you are in the “spotlight,” you always need to be a good example.

  • The Belizean culture brings many temptations to the locals. Do not let your “freedom” become a stumbling block to them. Avoid every appearance of evil.

  • We are not trying to change the world. We are trying to make a difference in one place.

Things to accomplish

  • Accomplish your assigned task in an excellent fashion, giving glory to God

Prospective Team Members: There are a limited number of slots on the Team (primarily limited by accommodations available transportation in Belize). This is no vacation. While we will have a good time, we will work hard, and the days will be long. Please remember that everyone will be expected to carry their own weight and accomplish their assigned task, or the Team cannot function to its full potential. If you are not fully prepared to make the sacrifices required to be part of the Team, please don’t take a spot that someone else really wants.
